Signal crayfish burrowing, bank retreat and sediment supply to rivers: A biophysical sediment budget

چکیده
Burrowing into riverbanks by animals transfers sediment directly river channels and has been hypothesised to accelerate bank erosion promote mass failure. A field monitoring study on two UK rivers invaded signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) assessed the impact of burrowing processes. Erosion pins were installed in 17 across a gradient burrow densities monitored for 22 months. Bank retreat increased significantly with density. At scale (<6 m length), high associated accelerated up 253% more than doubling area collapse compared banks without burrows. Direct supply activity contributed 0.2% 0.6% total at reach (1.1 km) local m) scales. However, caused burrows 12.2% 29.8% Together, acceleration supplied an additional 25.4 t km−1 a−1 floodplain sediments one site, demonstrating substantial that can have fine supply. For first time, empirical relation linking animal characteristics riverbank is presented. The adds small number budget studies compare fluxes driven biotic abiotic energy but unique isolating measuring interactive effect facilitated activity. Biotic expended through represents surcharge system augment geophysical mechanisms.

Sediment supply controls equilibrium channel geometry in gravel rivers.
In many gravel-bedded rivers, floods that fill the channel banks create just enough shear stress to move the median-sized gravel particles on the bed surface (D50). Because this observation is common and is supported by theory, the coincidence of bankfull flow and the incipient motion of D50 has become a commonly used assumption. However, not all natural gravel channels actually conform to this...
متن کاملSediment patches, sediment supply, and channel morphology
Bed surface particle size patchiness may play a central role in bedload and morphologic response to changes in sediment supply in gravel-bed rivers. Here we test a 1-D model (from Parker ebook) of bedload transport, surface grain size, and channel profile with two previously published flume studies that documented bed surface response, and specifically patch development, to reduced sediment sup...

Sediment budget and routing studies have been useful in dealing with a variety of basic and applied problems over a wide range of scales in time and space. Further research and application is needed to: define and quantify sediment storage; improve knowledge of mechanisms of sediment-transport processes; quantify frequency and magnitude of episodic processes; integrate biological factors into q...
متن کاملSluicing Flumes for Gauging Sediment-Laden Rivers
The sluicing flume that was designed is less capable of silting up and losing its calibration than its counterparts of standard sharp-crested compound weir design. The laboratory work described here led to a refinement in the design in the form of a short flume set into the lowest section of a compound Crump weir gauging installation. Critical flow occurs near the exit of this flume, and it is ...
